On February 8th my students planted beans on two terraces in the Finca Alzamora as part of a laboratory for the course TMAG 4019 Farm Irrigation and Drainage Systems. In a previous post I provided a link to the photos showing the installation of the drip irrigation system. Today I have a few photos showing the emergence of the bean plants. So far it looks like emergence is over 90%. Thanks to Dr. Tim Porch of the USDA TARS for contributing the bean seed from his research work. Click Here to see other photos from the class.

Twenty-one days ago I uploaded a post saying that the Finca Alzamora weather station was up and running after being down since December 29th. That was true for about 24 hours when it died again. The problem wasn’t a bad battery, but the batter/solar panel circuit board. I have now replaced the board and the system is up and running again, hopefully for a good long time.

Although the blog refers to the Dominican Republic, all the information is also applicable to Puerto Rico and the other surrounding islands.
All over the Caribbean and Latin America Zika is making an appearance. Though the Dominican Republic as of yet remains unaffected it is only a matter of time for it to spread here from Haiti or from people on incoming flights. This is the second new vector borne virus to hit the island in two years. Two years ago Chikungunya hit DR. Within months it spread to a very large number of people, me among them. A year and a half ago my partner I contracted the illness and are still suffering with it to this day.
We are very apprehensive and concerned about Zika Virus. The outcomes in other countries for pregnant women are frightening. The rate of pregnancies here could mean a lot of disabled children being born, deaths of the seriously ill, and simply no one wants another virus. Many of it’s symptoms equal that of chikungunya…
